Smoked Yolk Junction hatched from curiosity, a touch of chaos, and a whole lot of love for chickens.
When I first started to come to Tennessee in 2022, Allen had two hens and a rooster. A simple start—but it didn’t stay that way for long. After a year of gentle persuasion (okay, maybe not that gentle), I convinced him to let me buy four chicks from the feed store. What I didn’t know was the minimum was six… so we came home with six. And like any good chicken tale, it didn’t stop there.
Once the neighbors found out we had chicks, they suggested we get a few more from a local breeder to make sure we got pullets. Well, that made sense—so we bought four more. Now we had ten fluffy little mysteries, and by some miracle, they all turned out to be hens. That was the beginning of it all. Allen built a bigger coop using repurposed materials, and just like that, our little barnyard flock was born.
in 2024, I was on the hunt for a particular breed and entered a raffle for hatching eggs. I bought five chances and didn’t win. So I tried again… and won twice. Suddenly, we had 24 hatching eggs, from Hogg's Heaven Farm in Shelbyville, Ky, headed our way—and I had never hatched an egg in my life.
With a prayer and an incubator, we managed to hatch 16 beautiful chicks: Fibro Easter Eggers, Black Bresse, a couple Mars Bars, and a stunning Pita Pinta Asturiana rooster. I had my heart set on the Black Bresse—but it was that flashy Pita Pinta roo who stole it.
With the sudden influx of feathered residents, Allen went full architect and built the Chicken Mansion—a coop fit for a flock. In 2025, I contacted Hogg's Heaven Farm, only to find he’d downsized and wasn't currently focusing on the Pita Pinta Asturiana . So, I reached out to Greenfire Farms and ordered hatching eggs. We also added Crele Bielefelders to the mix and tossed in six of our own Easter Egger eggs for good measure.
Our hatch rate?
– Ordered eggs: 42%
– Our eggs: a proud 100%
Now, we’re focusing on building up two key breeds—Pita Pinta Asturiana and Crele Bielefelder—while still keeping our lively barnyard flock. Our coop may have grown, but our approach hasn’t changed: small-scale, hands-on, and full of heart.
Smoked Yolk Junction isn’t just a farm. It’s the product of early mornings, late-night hatches, a little luck, and a lot of love. And probably a few too many chickens (if there even is such a thing).
